Back To The Workhouse
Posted 1 September 2016

Our 6th September gathering will be made to go back into the Workhouse on an evening with the Story-tellers of the Workhouse. They will bring to life the hard times people faced inside the walls of the Southwell Workhouse. Much more fun in the telling than the living, this evening promises to be educational and entertaining. Come along and time travel in the comfort of your chair.

Denman Residential College
Posted 18th August 2017

In July The County Federation booked 'Denman' for a long weekend  We filled two coaches and went from the Friday  till Sunday. it is very popular and spaces are balloted.  Four of us from Arnold W.I. were lucky to go.
There were several courses to choose from..
A tour of Blenheim palace, with lectures in the college to accompany the proceedings.
Cookery in the beautifully equiped catering studio.. The course was 'Starters & Puddings"
A patchwork bag project.
The history & music of the Carpenters.  This involved some singing which the rest of us appreciated on the final morning.
The films of Audrey Hepburn, with discussions and excerpts & a film chosen on the final evening.
All this & no shopping, cooking etc & lots of great company.
All the courses at Denman can be found on-line.
If you have never been to Denman give it a go....

This month we hear about the work of Maggies - the cancer support centre at the City Hospital. Kate Martin will be along to help us understand the service they offer to cancer patients and their families and the importance of their work.

Window On Talent
Posted 25 May 2016

Prepare to be amazed at our monthly meeting when you see the wonderful pieces of art created by our speaker, Rosemary Pike. Her talent lies in stained glass. She makes small decorative objects up to commissions for large stained glass windows.

She will tell us a little about the process of stained glass making and show us how she goes about creating a commission piece.

You might want to bring along a few pounds as there will be a chance to purchase some of her creations on the night.

Make Your Mind Up
Posted 23 April 2016

May is always the resolution meeting. The WI debate a couple of possible campaign topics and vote whether to support them over the coming year.

Any member can propose a resolution.  She then puts it to her own W I when the members vote for it to proceed.  It then goes to County and then if successful to National.
If it goes forward to the Anuual General Meeting and the vote is carried it empowers the National Committee to lobby parliament to effect change.
The W I is proud of its past successes and is a truly democratic organisation.

The vote from our WI will be taken forward to the Annual Meeting of the national Federation in Brighton later in the year. Come along with an open mind and opinions to share in the debate.

April Meeting
Posted 2nd April 2016

Centenary Celebrations
Posted 5 July 2015

Picture
There have been lots of events taking place this year to celebrate 100 years of the WI arranged by both Nottinghamshire Federation & National.
Details of all of them can be found in your copy of Hornblower Magazine, in WI Life magazine & on the Nottinghamshire Federation website.

The two biggest events took place in June.
On 2nd June a lucky representative from each WI in the country was invited to Buckingham Palace to a garden party to celebrate the Centenary. Look out for a write up from our rep very soon.
On 4th June the 100th AGM was held at the Royal Albert Hall - see image above. HM the Queen, Princess Anne & Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, attended the event. The whole day was also televised with live streaming of the event being shown at Cineworld in Nottingham. Look out for a write up of this amazing event too.

Newstead Abbey Flower & Craft Festival
Posted 1 July 2015

PictureVirginia Wade
The Centenary Flower & Craft Festival was held at Newstead Abbey on 26th 27th & 28th June 2015.
The flowers were beautiful & the imagination of the florists was staggering. Over 50 WIs took part all representing famous inspiring women both past & present.
Our display featured Virgina Wade and, as you can see from the photo, it was lovely.  Well done Jean & co.
Needless to say the refreshments supplied by the WI helpers were their usual scrummy best.
